Pain Relief During Birth at Mater Dei
As the saying goes, ‘no gain without pain’ and in the case of birth, this is so true! Pain is part of labor and if a baby is born naturally it can never be born without any pain, as it is the pain itself which makes the mother push the baby out.
The pain threshold of each person varies. Some women feel the first mild contractions terrifying while others find the contractions bearable and make it to the end of labor without the need of any pain relief.
During the first stage of labor, you will feel the pain of the contractions while your cervix is dilating. During the second stage of labor, you will feel pain and your instinct will be to fight the pain by pushing the baby out. The pain in the second stage of labor is probably easier to cope with as you can react to it and push and you also know that you are closer to the end. The pain in the first stage of labor can be quite hard to endure. Don’t feel bad if the pain is too much for you to bear and you need to make use of pain relief. As we said in the beginning, pain thresholds vary for each person. Besides, it is you who is giving birth, so it is your right to decide how to cope with it. There is nothing wrong with trying to feel less pain while giving birth. On the contrary, if help is available, why not use it?
For women who want to make use of pain relief during labor, Mater Dei hospital in Malta offers 3 options.
> The Mask – Entonox – gas and air – also called “the laughing gas”
