How do I tell if my newborn is wetting the nappy?
When a baby is breastfed, midwives and doctors will often ask you whether he/she is wetting the nappy during the first few weeks, as that is one of the indicators that the baby is drinking properly. However newborn babies have such tiny stomachs that it is hard to tell whether they have actually wet the nappy or not. Wet nappies won’t feel much heavier and they won’t stink either, especially if you are changing it every hour or two. Nappies nowadays are so good that even if you place your hand on the inside of a wet one, your hand will not get moist. So how do you tell if the nappy is wet or not?
Inexperienced parents will be at a loss here. But there is an easy way to find out if the nappy is wet or not. Take hold of a new, dry nappy. With the tips of your fingers, pinch it to feel the contents of the nappy from the outside. You will feel tiny granules, like small little balls between your fingers. Now wet the nappy slightly by placing a few tablespoons of water in it. Once again pinch it from the outside with your fingers. You will now feel a jelly like substance inside the nappy.
Once you get used to these different textures, you will be able to gauge the wetness of the nappy even while the baby is wearing it.
