The Swine Flu Vaccine in Malta and Pregnancy
Pregnant women can now take the Swine Flu Vaccine from all Health Care centres in Malta. One of our readers had the following question regarding this jab:
Everyone is talking about Swine flu and about taking the vaccine....is the vaccine really safe? Was it tested adequately before it is being given to us? I'm 26 weeks pregnant and worried that it may have unexpected side effects.
BabiesMalta.com asked Dr.Charmaine Gauci, Director Health Promotion and Disease Prevention who replied as follows:
"The H1N1 immunisation programmes are running in more than 27 countires and over 28 million people have been vaccinated. Of these there are over 90,000 pregannt women who have been vaccinated . The vaccine is manufactured under high standards of patient safety and care. The safety profile is constantly being monitored and the number os side effcts reported have been within those expected. They are similar to those of seasonal flu vaccine and may include tiredness, headache, fever, jiont/muscale pain and pain or redness at injection site. These are minor side efefcts and do not last long. Many persons have been vaccinated and had no side effects at all. We encourage all pregant women to take this vaccine since they are more at risk of complications if they get the H1N1 infection."
