Preparing your child for the birth of his new sibling
The arrival of the second child is seen as a huge change by the first child. Psychologists describe it as a ‘dethroning’ effect, whereby the child will now no longer be the only person seeking and gaining attention. The parents and grandparents will no longer be cooing over his/her every action as the newborn comes into the scene. Young children and toddlers react to this by engaging in behavior which attracts attention in some way, and most frequently this is bad behavior. Toddlers who are perfectly potty trained will start wetting their pants once again, others who can walk will start crawling around, children will cry more and will do things that anger their parents, anything to get more attention than their new sibling.
Parents can start preparing for this during pregnancy. By preparing the toddler/child for the new arrival, the change will be better accepted. Here are some tips on how to prepare the child during pregnancy and during the first few weeks after the baby's arrival.
